Joint Appointment & Courtesy Affiliations

You are here

All faculty members at Lehigh have a home department. There are two primary mechanisms by which Lehigh faculty members can be affiliated with multiple departments or programs: joint appointments and courtesy affiliations.

A joint appointment means that the faculty member also has a secondary appointment in one or more additional departments or programs. The secondary department or program plays a role in the faculty member’s review, promotion, and tenure (RPT).

There are two types of joint appointments at Lehigh, based on how much of the faculty member’s effort is assigned to a unit outside their home department:

  • Type 1: At least 40% effort is outside the home department

  • Type 2: Less than 40% effort is outside the home department

The faculty member’s teaching responsibilities, voting rights, and so on in the secondary department or program are specified in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

A courtesy affiliation is a less formal way than a joint appointment to signal a faculty member’s connection to another unit. Courtesy affiliations should be used for situations where the effort in the second unit is less than ten percent. Courtesy affiliated faculty, whether internal or external to the university, will not have voting rights in the unit where the affiliation is granted.
